Fixing Up A Chipped Gem

While aquamarine gemstones are magnificent and beautiful gems, they do have a weakness. Like many other gemstones, aquamarines can be broken. I know what you're thinking, they're stones, they should be hard as a rock. Well they are, but all rocks can be broken, and some easier than others.
A lot of people don’t think about this when they are wearing gemstone jewelry and are really rough on their pieces. Eventually, that can lead to chip or a break in the stone.
So, what if you were not careful with your aquamarine jewelry and have now chipped the gemstone. What do you do? If you want to have a perfect looking aquamarine jewelry piece again, you are going to have to have the stone fixed.
This is not something a little glue will take care of. You will actually have to have the aquamarine stone re-cut and reset. This job is for someone bigger than your regular jeweler, although they may be helpful for a little guidance.
You’re going to have to find a lapidary. This is a person whose life is the cutting of stones. If you have a jeweler, they will likely be able to get you in contact with someone who can do the work you need. If you have a faceted stone that you have chipped they will have to look closely at the crystal and find a way to cut it into a new shape, while saving as much of the original size as possible. This will depend on how your stone has chipped and if there are any other cracks going through it that will effect the possible cuts. Unfortunately, if you chip the stone along the top, which is most common, often the whole top of the stone has to be cut off, and the cutting of the facets started from scratch.
