Keeping Your Aquamarine Out of Trouble
Once you have a treasured piece of aquamarine jewelry, you want to keep it looking beautiful for years to come. You can’t expect your aquamarine necklace or ring to take care of itself. It’s done its part by looking great to start with. You are responsible to keep it looking that way.
The most important thing to know about aquamarine is that although it is a stone, it can be broken. Aquamarine gemstones can be shattered if they are hit against a rough surface. So treat it as the precious gem it is.
Next, the chemicals we wear day-to-day can have a negative effect on aquamarines. As with other pieces of jewelry, you should always put your aquamarine jewelry on last and take if off first. That means put all your make up, hair spray, perfumes and other items on before you put your aquamarine necklace on, and get the necklace off before you add more of those things. This goes for rings as well. If you are putting on oils or lotions, take your aquamarine rings off first, oil or lotion and let it dry. Then put your aquamarine ring back on. You should also wipe your jewelry with a cloth when you take it off, to get rid of any residue that has gotten on it.
Once in a while, give your aquamarine jewelry a bath. Soak it in warm water with a mild soap, and then clean it with a very soft brush or cloth. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner, as their shock waves could crack the gemstone.
Also, keep your grubby mitts off your jewelry. A lot of people like to fondle and feel their aquamarine jewelry over and over again. The problem with this is the oil in your skin is now getting on the stones and can be damaging.
Finally, while you may like to show off your jewelry all the time, take it off before going in the pool, as chlorine can be damaging. Sunlight can also lighten the color of your aquamarine over time.
